Supervision for Supervisors
Good reflective supervision facilitates safe practice with children and families. This training programme is designed for staff supervising front line practitioners. It aims to provide participants with the skills required to deliver effective supervision with a focus on self-reflection, alongside practical tools and methods for supervising complex practice.
The course is relevant for supervisors of front line practitioners. It is based on the model for supervision developed by Tony Morrison. There is an expectation that participants engage with the training actively and complete tasks between days 2 and 3 of the training to maximise impact. This will include video or audio recording a supervision session.
By the end of the programme participants will have been given the opportunity to:
- Understand the importance and key elements of effective supervision and recognise the impact of supervision on outcomes for children.
- Identify the four key functions of supervision and be clear about the stakeholders in supervision.
- Understand the influence of supervision histories both on the supervisor and supervisee.
- Consider the role of supervision throughout the stages of professional development from newly qualified to experienced practitioner.
- Understand how to promote reflection and the effective analysis of information throughout the assessment and planning process and how to record the decision making process.
- Use supervision to enable supervisees to critically appraise their practice.
- Be aware of how to positively manage the impact of child care work, enabling emotions to be used to enrich thinking and support safe practice.
- Use tools to help staff evaluate and analyse information to inform decision making and risk management.
